If you are using flat, prefold, or fitted diapers, you will need to use some type of waterproof diaper cover (aka - wrap) with your diaper. What kind of diaper cover you decide to use depends on your budget and and preferences. Diaper covers are available in a number of different fabrics depending on your budget and preferences. Diaper covers have evolved considerably since the days of rubber pants and safety pins. Today, good quality diaper covers are made of breathable, water-resistant fabrics such as polyester or cotton bonded to a urethane laminate. Knit polyester covers are the most durable and the easiest to maintain. 'Hook & loop' and plastic snap closures ensure snug, comfortable fits that allow a diaper cover to grow with a baby. Some diaper covers even have tyke-proof buckles to ensure that a diaper will stay on (naturally) curious children. It is important to note that the covers found in department or drug stores are typically lower priced, and that is usually because they are made of cheaper materials (the adage 'you get what you pay for' applies here). These covers are typically made of plastic, which hardens and cracks with repeated washings. As a result, low-cost plastic pull-ons are not a smart investment because they will not last as long as the new, high tech fabrics. I sell diaper covers that I have used personally, and that have received good consumer reviews.
