The story of the DIDYMOS - baby sling started in 1971 with our twins Lisa and Tina (twin = ancient Greek didymos):

Once, when crying from the nursery was an unmistakable signal for: "Mummy, I have woken up!", but a mountain of unfinished housework could not be put off any longer, I finally decided to tie the little crybaby around myself just as women in other parts of our planet had done for centuries. Before then I had been fascinated by reports from distant countries where women pursued their daily work in a most uncomplicated way while intimately attached to their children. I owned a carrying cloth from Central America; but it seemed too exotic at first and that is why I had hidden it in the chest of drawers.

But now the time had come: I tried for a while until I found the right method and walked through our village where we had moved a few weeks before the birth of our twins. Very soon we were the talk of the village and not all the comments were positive. But the twins convinced me. They started smiling as soon as they saw the cloth, and I also enjoyed the physical contact, once with Lisa, then with Tina, just like a prolonged pregnancy. It also had other advantages: My work did not have to be squeezed into the short moments when they were asleep, I could manage the household again and became more relaxed, knowing that the two little ones received as much warmth and physical contact as their brother and sister had when they were babies and I carried them around on my arm.

The carrying cloth would probably have become a nice memento of the our twins’ early years, but when the "Heilbronner Stimme" and "Stern" magazine published articles about us, parents all over Germany wanted carrying cloths from me, and I only had one myself...

How I founded the baby-sling company in a small village, with four children and living in a half-finished house is another story. However this much is true, I could not have done it without the baby sling.

Didymos wrap

Newborns needs to be carried in a reclining position until they have achieve head control. In this photo, the baby has been placed with her head on the same side of the Maya Wrap Baby Sling as the rings. It is also possible to wear your baby with the head on the other side of the Baby Sling. When nursing, the tail of the Maya Wrap Baby Sling may be placed over your shoulder to provide complete discretion. No other baby carrier can offer you better coverage. Babies with head control prefer to sit up so they can see their world. You can carry your child in a Maya Wrap Baby Sling sitting cross legged or seated with with his or her feet coming out of the bottom of the Baby Sling.

Product features

With almost 30 years of experience behind us, we have compiled an extensive list of criteria for our DIDYMOS baby slings.

According to this a DIDYMOS sling has the following characteristics:

- It is woven in such a way that it supports the body of the child all over evenly and has built-in elasticity.

- Even after a long time of use and pressure it does not stretch and wear out.

- The edges have double hems so that the cloth of the sling keeps its shape even after prolonged carrying.

- The dyes are not poisonous, free from any heavy metals and completely non-allergic to the skin.

- The fabric is not processed, finished or otherwise treated either before or after manufacture.

- Auxiliary materials like dressings or lubricants are not used during the weaving process.

- The cotton is free from poisonous chemicals like insecticides or defoliants - we regularly test these factors.

- We only use long-fibrous cotton, which has proved to be anti-abrasive.

- The sling is washable at normal temperatures (60 or 95 C).

- The luxurious and complex manufacturing process, using different yarns for both warp and weft, guarantees that the cloth of the sling stays soft and elastic even after many washes.

The DIDYMOS baby-sling is produced in 7 sizes. The sling-length you'll need depends mainly on the carrying method you are choosing. Apart from that your own size is of some relevance, too. Size 2 is suitable for the "cradle" or "hip-carry" method, size 3 for the "rucksack", size 4 for the "kangaroo-carry", size 5 for the "cross-carry" and size 6 or 7 for the "wrap-cross-carry". In other words, if your own body size is no more than 14 you can use sling size 6 for all carrying methods. From body size 16 you are better off with sling size 7.
